Seán McSweeney (Dublin, Ireland, 1935, lives and works in Sligo, Ireland) is highly regarded as one of Ireland most important painters.
The work is based on the characteristic landscape and shoreline surrounding his house, flooded with unique north Atlantic light. McSweeney’s paintings show strong, vibrant layers and abstract shapes, with expressive gestures and poetic feeling. The physical aspect of paint forms an important aspect of his art in combination with the sense of colour and colour compositions and space. Firmly rooted in the tradition of landscape painting, the work of McSweeney shows enriched with modern and contemporary references.
His work can be viewed in several public collections such as the IMMA Musuem of Modern Art, Dublin, Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Ulster Museum, Belfast, UK. The work has been included in several international solo and group shows.
